Burnout

Wired, Tired and Running on Empty?

Cortisol, burnout & the busy woman

By Kirsten  ·  Sacred Origins Health

Do you go to bed exhausted but still struggle to switch off?

Perhaps you find yourself snapping at the people you love, forgetting simple things or struggling to string together a clear thought. You might lie awake replaying conversations, worrying about tomorrow’s to-do list and wondering why your mind will not quieten down.

If this sounds familiar, you are not falling apart.

Your body may simply have been operating in survival mode for too long.

That feeling of being tired but unable to rest is often described as “wired and tired”. You are constantly switched on, yet running on empty.

“It can feel like you are running on an endless wheel, doing everything you can but never feeling fully present.”

You are not alone, and this is not a personal failure. Many women carry the pressure of work, family, relationships and the invisible mental load of keeping everything moving. Over time, that pressure can begin to affect how you think, feel, sleep and function.

What Does Cortisol Actually Do?

Cortisol is one of the hormones involved in your body’s stress response. It plays an important role in helping you respond to challenges, regulate energy and remain alert when you need to be.

In short bursts, this response is both normal and useful.

The difficulty arises when stress becomes persistent and your body has limited opportunities to recover. You may begin to feel as though you are constantly “on”, even when you desperately want to rest.

The symptoms you are experiencing are not signs that you need to try harder. They may be signs that your body and nervous system need greater support.

What Burnout Can Look Like

Burnout is more than feeling tired after a busy week. It can affect your emotional, mental and physical wellbeing.

Emotionally

You may feel anxious, overwhelmed, irritable or unusually reactive. Your patience feels thinner, small problems feel enormous and you may no longer recognise the way you respond to the people around you.

Mentally

Brain fog, forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating can make everyday tasks feel harder. You walk into a room and forget why. You read the same sentence several times. Making even a simple decision can feel exhausting.

Physically

You may notice changes in your sleep, digestion, appetite, libido or energy. Some women experience persistent fatigue, bloating, weight changes or an energy crash during the morning or afternoon.

These experiences can have many possible causes, so ongoing or concerning symptoms should always be discussed with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

In Your Relationships

When you are depleted, it becomes harder to be present with your partner, children, friends or colleagues. That can create guilt, which adds another layer of emotional pressure. You may feel as though everyone needs something from you, while you have very little left to give.

This does not make you selfish, difficult or incapable. It means you are human, and you may have been carrying too much for too long.

Why Another Coffee May Not Be the Answer

When you are running on empty, coffee can feel like the quickest way to keep going. Caffeine may provide a temporary lift, but it cannot replace sleep, nourishment or genuine recovery. For some people, relying heavily on caffeine can also contribute to feeling restless, anxious or unable to settle at night.

This can create a familiar cycle: you are exhausted, so you reach for caffeine. You push through the day, struggle to switch off at night and wake up needing another boost.

This is not a willpower problem. It is a sign that pushing harder may no longer be giving your body what it needs.

Rather than judging yourself for needing coffee, become curious about what sits underneath that need. Are you sleeping deeply? Eating regularly? Taking meaningful breaks? Getting enough protein and nutrient-rich foods? Allowing your nervous system time to slow down?

The goal is not perfection. It is awareness.

What Can Genuinely Help?

You may not be able to change your work, family responsibilities or life circumstances overnight. They are real, and broad advice to “reduce stress” can feel frustrating when you already know you are stressed.

What you can begin to change is the way you support your body through demanding periods. This might include improving sleep habits, stabilising meals, reviewing caffeine intake, addressing nutritional gaps and creating small but consistent opportunities for recovery.

Naturopathic care can provide a structured and personalised way to explore these areas. Rather than treating every person the same, the focus is on understanding your symptoms, health history, nutrition, lifestyle and individual needs.

Any herbs or supplements should be selected carefully and individually. Natural products can still interact with medications or be unsuitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding or certain health conditions. Personalised professional guidance matters.

Most importantly, you deserve to feel heard. Sometimes, having someone take the time to listen to your full story is where the journey back to wellbeing begins.

Five Supportive Things You Can Do Right Now

You do not need to overhaul your life in one weekend. Start with one manageable change and allow it to become part of your routine.

What Recovery Might Look Like

Imagine waking up and feeling more rested. Imagine having steadier energy throughout the day, thinking more clearly and feeling more patient with the people you love. Imagine being able to enjoy your morning coffee because you want it, rather than feeling as though you cannot function without it.

Recovery does not always happen in a straight line, and it rarely comes from one perfect habit. It is usually created through small, consistent choices that give your body the safety, nourishment and support it needs.

These steps are not silver bullets. They are starting points, and over time, they can add up.

You Do Not Have to Keep Pushing Through

If you have been living in survival mode for so long that it now feels normal, please know that it does not have to stay that way.
